Nepal's Rasuwa Glacier Flash Flood, August 2026: The Documentary
What happened when ice and rock collapsed above the Lhende valley on 26 August 2026, sending a flash flood through Rasuwa and along the Nepal-China border.
What happened on 26 August
On 26 August 2026 a mass of glacier ice and rock broke away above the Lhende valley in the Himalayas. The avalanche fed into a natural dam, the dam gave way, and a debris flow surged down the valley into Rasuwa district and the communities along the border between Nepal and China.
The flood swept away homes and bridges and destroyed the Rasuwagadhi border crossing. When the film was published on 29 August 2026, hundreds of people were reported dead and thousands were missing.
Why it was not over
The danger did not end with the first surge. A new barrier lake had formed in the flood's path, and on 28 August that lake burst, raising the threat of a second flood. That second lake is why the film's title says the disaster isn't over.
What the film covers
The film starts with the morning the mountain fell and a plain account of the sequence of events, then follows the surge itself and the rescue effort. It goes on to explain the cause, an ice-rock avalanche feeding a natural dam that failed, and why the resulting debris flow was so destructive. It then turns to the human toll, the second lake and the risk that remained, and ends with what the disaster means as a warning for the wider Himalayas.
All of the footage comes from verified news coverage and recordings made by eyewitnesses. Where no footage of a moment exists, a short recreation is used, and it is labelled as one on screen.
How to help
The film points viewers who want to help to two organisations working in Nepal: the Nepal Red Cross Society and UNICEF Nepal. Both are linked below, and their own websites are the best place to check for current appeals and how donations are used.
